“It wasn’t me; it was the Lord! I always told Him, ‘I trust to you. I do not know where to go or what to do, but I expect You to lead me,’ and He always did.”

This powerful quote was expressed by abolitionist Harriet Tubman. As a student at St. Pius X Catholic School, I try to put these very words into my life every day.

People such as the esteemed Harriet Tubman show how strong and effective these words can be. Faith is a major part of Christianity and many other religions. Even if some people are not Catholic, we share the same belief of a powerful and everlasting power. But what is faith? Faith is the absolute trust in someone or something. Faith is what helps us get through our toughest times. Harriet Tubman was said to listen to the voice of God as she led slaves North, and she would only go where she felt God was leading her. I try to take this into account. How could a person be so brave and selfless? By seeing the light of God, she was able to overcome her many obstacles. This is something we all can do. In 2 Corinthians 5:7 it reads, “For we walk by faith, not by sight.”

When I lack faith, I think about how Harriet Tubman handled her problems. Faith is a critical part in the lives of many Christians. I tend to fall short of doing this but reading the works and life story of such an influential person, I get better at it every day.

While attending a Catholic school, I am able to learn more about God than I had before. When learning about Catholicism, we strive to achieve the work that God wants us to do. Decoding pieces of the Bible and trying to understand the different parts of the literature is also entertaining. Through prayer, we are able to communicate with Him as one and spread the good news.

Faith is what drives us as believers of God. Without faith, we would be stranded in pools of confusion and loneliness. Although with God, this is no longer a disturbance because we know we can depend on him. As stated in the Bible, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” (Psalm 23:4).

Iyanna Whitehurst is in the eighth grade and has attended St. Pius X School since 2016. Her hobbies include baking, playing video games and spending time with her family.
