GIOVANNI VIRGIGLIO, principal of St. Mary's Institute in Amsterdam, is receiving the young professional award from the Amsterdam Chamber of Commerce during a dinner this month. "From his first day as principal, Giovanni reached out to the chamber and the wider community," wrote SISTER MARY JANE HERB, IHM, diocesan superintendent of schools, in announcing the award....

During Catholic Schools Week, the Siena College Saints from Loudonville will play St. Peter's Feb. 3 at the Times Union Center; attendees are invited to wear their school colors to the game. There are discounted tickets for students and adults and everyone gets a free Siena gift.

The men's basketball team from Siena College visited children and families at the Children's Hospital at Albany Medical Center last week, part of a long-standing partnership between Siena's athletic department and Ronald McDonald House Charities. The athletes played games, made crafts and spoke with the children....

Two finalists have been selected in the search for a new president for The College of Saint Rose in Albany: DR. DANIEL MAY of Ohio, currently vice president for academic affairs at the University of Findlay, Ohio; and DR. DAVID SZCZERBACKI of Albany, currently CSR's provost and vice president of academic affairs. A decision is expected in the spring.

CSR is presenting a regional, juried high school art exhibition at its Esther Massry Gallery (1002 Madison Ave., Albany), Feb. 15-March 15, with 100 students from 19 area school districts.

Twenty CSR students and six advisers spent a week of winter break preparing and serving meals to the homeless, working poor and homebound in Washington, D.C....

A teacher from Holy Spirit School in East Greenbush sent a letter of profound thanks to the school for having supported her family when her infant son needed a liver transplant in December. Not only was the school flexible with her work hours, but the school community created "The Cooper Fund" to offset the financial burden, held fundraisers and bought Christmas presents for her three-year-old son when she was unable to shop. "Holy Spirit is a school that practices what it preaches," she wrote....

The deadline is Feb. 13 for the Redemptorists' Neumann essay contest for students in grades six-12. The theme is, "Why is it important to learn about and live my faith?" Winners get $300 or $100 scholarships; see www.redemptorists.net/neumann....

DONNIE MILOS, an alumnus of LaSalle Institute in Troy, and his criminal justice team won trophies at an American Criminal Justice Association conference last fall....

St. Francis de Sales School in Herkimer has begun a 10-week program called "Too Good for Drugs" for students in grades three through six. The New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities just presented a puppet show about disabilities for third- and fourth-graders....
