St. Francis de Sales School in Herkimer has started its school band for the fourth year (read a previous story at www.evangelist.org). This year, the band chose a name: "The St. Francis Out of This World Band." It's got three saxophone players, two clarinetists, a trumpeter, a flutist and a drummer....

Sacred Heart parish in Castleton is using several bequests, donations and money raised through youth ministry fundraisers to restore its church bell and tower....

At Holy Spirit parish in Glovers­ville, the youth ministry is doing a fundraiser with the California-based HIS coffee company, a Christian business that promotes making time for God daily with the slogan, "Jesus, coffee and me." The youth group gets $5 for every bag of coffee sold....

Scoutmaster LEWIS LICARI is retiring from his position with Boy Scout Troop 1 at Our Lady Queen of Apostles parish in Frankfort. Seventeen of his scouts earned their Eagle rank in his 24 years of service. He'll now serve as unit commissioner for the troop and for Cub Scout Pack 30....

At Sacred Heart parish in Sidney, REV. BEN AMPONG is spearheading a clothing drive for poor people in his local community in Ghana, West Africa. The LIFTS group at Holy Cross parish in Salem has been collecting new and gently-used baby clothes to distribute to agencies in Washington County that serve new moms and families....

St. Henry's parish in Averill Park had a confirmation retreat at Zion Church in Taborton, led by DAVE STAGLIANO, diocesan associate director of campus and youth ministry. The parish is having an "undie Sunday" Jan. 20-21, collecting new underwear for children and adults to distribute through homeless shelters and other service agencies....

The youth ministry at St Thomas the Apostle parish in Delmar is having a Catholic trivia night Jan. 21, 6:30-7:30 p.m. At St. Thomas School, fifth-grader MACKENZIE SHERBURNE won the Times Union newspaper's holiday card contest. St. Thomas students were asked their favorite part of Mass recently; some answers were, "Communion, because it makes me feel close to God" (from fifth-grader CLAIRE); "Serving as an acolyte, because I feel like I am serving God" (from eighth-grader TYLER) and, "FATHER [DAVID] BERBERIAN, [pastor,] because he is good" (from first-grader CLARK)....

Four Girl Scouts at Immaculate Conception parish in Hoosick Falls have received their silver awards, the highest honor in scouting: ALEAH STOWELL, PAYTON ZEDALIS, CAROLINE STILL and ROSABELL PLUSH. They worked at the parish food pantry and community garden.

Immaculate Conception parish in Hoosick Falls plans a lunar eclipse party Jan. 24, 6:45 a.m., at St. Mary's Cemetery. Parishioners will watch the setting full moon eclipsed by their shadows and have coffee, hot chocolate and muffins.

Also at Immaculate Conception, there's a box in the church to collect spare change to support charities that serve local people. "All jingling contributions are welcome," said the bulletin....

ANNE AROCHO of St. Joseph's parish in Scotia organized Christmas-card signing for military personnel. Through her efforts, 233 cards were sent to the troops....

Holy Cross parish in Morris advises, "Why not start the year with an empty jar and fill it each day with notes about good things that happen? Then, on New Year's Eve 2018, empty it and see what an awesome year you had"....

St. Mary's parish in Ballston Spa and its mission church, St. Mary's in Galway, offered these "ideas for the new year" from their faith formation program: "Start your new year off on the right track with free spiritual reading. In the social hall are free books and CDs from Dynamic Catholic....Instead of using a store-bought calendar that has only secular special days listed, use the free calendar the church has at all entrances. This calendar lists the saint of the day and all holy days of obligation, turning your thoughts to God each day....Struggling with a big decision? Take it to God. Attend a daily Mass and talk to God about it. Masses at St. Mary's Ballston Spa are offered on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 7:45 a.m. Not convenient? Parishioner FRANK MCDONALD of Blessed Sacrament parish in Bolton Landing has a relative who is a Catholic sister who, along with two priests, has converted two storefronts in a depressed neighborhood in Philadelphia into Mother of Mercy House to help the underprivileged and celebrate Masses. Blessed Sacrament's Dignity of Life ministry will help through a raffle; they'll fund 700 nutrition bags to be handed out to the needy around Mother of Mercy House in February....

MARY PAT AIOSSA is retiring in March after 34 years of service as parish coordinator at Mater Christi in Albany....

CLAUDIA DESTEFANO is moving on from her office position at St. James parish in Chatham; the parish called her one of "the true lights of the parish family" who will be missed....

Through its "Be My Witness" program, Holy Mother and Child parish in Corinth/Lake Luzerne is surveying diverse members of the parish community....

Our Lady Queen of Peace parish in Schenectady thanked parishioners who opened their homes for a Christmas house tour fundraiser: DINO AND MARIA CIMINO, MICHAEL KRAHULA, MICHAEL SKINKLE and PAM ZILKA. The parish social committee provided refreshments; an anonymous donor provided a shuttle bus. The event raised $610 for local food pantries....

St. Mary's parish in Crescent will again offer the "Financial Peace University" Wednesday evenings beginning Feb. 28, 6:30 p.m. The nine-week program, which costs $85, helps with debt and financial balance; read a previous story at www.evangelist.org. Call (518) 371-9632.
