Girls in high school are invited to join the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in Latham March 10, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., for "Girl Power," a day of exploring what to do after high school and how faith can affect those decisions. Our Lady of Fatima parish in Delanson asked girls from that parish to contact LAURA COUNTRYMAN, olfsacraments@gmail.com, about the event....

DEACON GEORGE WITKO of St. Mary's parish in Albany shared a recent homily, "Where is the kingdom of God?
"In the Gospel (Mark 1:14-20), Jesus announced that the kingdom of God was at hand. That was 2,000 years ago.  Where is that kingdom and what is the fulfillment He was talking about?" the deacon said. "Look at the way the world is today: so much hatred, lies, disrespect for one another, inequalities and injustices, self-interest instead of concern for the common good, drumbeats of atomic war and terrorism, sexual abuse and discrimination. What evidence is there of the existence of that kingdom and the so-called time of fulfillment?
"When Jesus and His disciples walked on this Earth, the most significant 'kingdom' in evidence was the Roman Empire. Jesus was considered a threat to Caesar and the empire. Throughout the centuries, the kingdom of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit has been in a continuous state of opposition, regarding many issues, to all the world's empires, nations and their societies.
"When Jesus spoke with His disciples about the coming of the kingdom and its fulfillment, He was calling His followers, as He is calling us now, to commit our primary and most important allegiance to the values and priorities of the one true kingdom He proclaimed, and not to the often contradictory values and priorities of the temporary cultures and unjust societies in which we live.
"We acknowledge our primary allegiance to the kingdom of God that Jesus proclaims when we accept the sacrament of baptism. Just like those first disciples who left their boats and fishing nets to follow Him, each of us commit ourselves, with the power of the Holy Spirit dwelling within us, to be God's agents and representatives unto all nations and societies. The evidence of God's kingdom and its fulfillment is seen by how we affect other persons, and the decisions we make. The kingdom of God is at hand when we work with Jesus to become the evidence and fulfillment of that kingdom in everything we do and in the words we speak."
