GOOD NEWS FOR KIDS
GET OVER YOURSELF
PRAYER FOR THE WEEK
Jesus, help me make sure I'm not getting an attitude and being prideful - and, if I am, to get over myself! Amen.

"Some people wear fancy clothes to look holy, and they burden others too much," Jesus said. "They show off when they pray and they want to be called 'Master.' But you have only one master: God. Those who praise themselves will be humbled, but the humble will be praised."

Everyone gets an attitude sometimes. You may be all puffed up with pride -- until someone says, "Get over yourself." Then you go from showing off to crashing down!

This week's Gospel (Matthew 23:1-12) is about people who have an attitude. In traveling around, Jesus has met a bunch of people who claim to be very holy. They show off with what they wear, what they want to be called and even how they pray. They want everyone to think they're all that.

If you've got an attitude, it often doesn't take long before someone tells you to "get over yourself." People don't put up with others being so prideful that they're just showing off.

Jesus didn't put up with it, either. He was a big believer in the old saying, "Actions speak louder than words." He said people didn't need to dress a certain way or pray loudly, in big words, to be holy.

In fact, it was the opposite. Jesus said that people who are humble -- people who do good things quietly, without drawing attention to themselves -- are the ones who are really holy. If you get an attitude and you need everyone to see how awesome you are, you may not actually be awesome.

Jesus wanted everyone's focus to be on God, not themselves. "Those who praise themselves will be humbled, but the humble will be praised," He said.

That's another way of saying, "Lose the attitude. Get over yourself!"
