On the death of James 'JJ' Hanson
James "JJ" Hanson, an outspoken advocate for patients rights and against physician-assisted suicide, died of brain cancer Dec. 30 at the age of 36. Mr. Hanson, a Hudson Valley resident, retired Marine and one-time member of the administration of former Gov. David Paterson, leaves behind his wife, Kristen, and two young sons, James and Lucas.

School aid veto disappoints
Last week, the New York State Catholic Conference was informed that Gov. Andrew Cuomo vetoed legislation (S.6089) that would have averted cuts in state reimbursements to Catholic and other non-public schools. The cuts are based on the state changing a nearly four-decade-old formula for calculating reimbursement.

North Country Ministry fights ever-present Adirondack poverty
Last Christmas, a single father stopped at North Country Ministry to pick up donated Christmas presents for his five-year-old son. As he accepted the gifts, he couldn't look the NCM caseworker in the eye -- but he pulled a $5 bill out of his pocket and held it out to her.

ON OCT. 28, 1917, the cornerstone for St. Patrick's Church in Ravena was dedicated before a crowd of 2,000, with a marching band and grandstand to overlook the ceremony. On Oct. 28, 2017, Bishop Emeritus Howard J. Hubbard was on hand to celebrate the centennial of that event.
