My uncle's medal

BY CONRAD HABIJAN

One particular object that greatly invokes my faith in God is a medallion that was given as a remembrance of a now deceased uncle. It also was passed on to spread and enrich the faith that was present in our world. On the face of the pendant, the medallion depicts the event of Mother Mary stepping on the skull of Satan the Serpent, signifying her triumph over evil and the promise that we as humans can do the same.

We as human make mistakes on a regular schedule, and having the knowledge that original sin can actually be overcome allows us to have even more faith in God, which is necessary to live a moral life.

This medallion is not the only sacramental which can invoke God's presence, but it fills us with a notion that we, children of God, are always being watched over and protected by the Holy Mother, who by nature has the qualities of tender, unconditional love towards all.

Sacramentals can be a physical link to God, for we can grasp it with our senses and communicate to Our Lord in an intimate way. One problem with sacramentals is that people tend to worship them instead of the heaving being, which totally negates the purpose of having the object. Rather, people must accept the truth that objects are only a tangible way of prayer and should not be substituted for the true purpose of cultivating our relationship with God.

Our Savior does extend himself through the sacraments, which are the quintessence of His earthly grace and symbolize a direct relationship with Him. Yet Jesus also offers sacramentals, objects which are the concrete evidence that, in our struggle as sinners, God is always there to guide us.
