Violence in the home

Statistics on domestic violence (from the New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence):

* Battering is the major cause of injury to women, resulting in more injuries to women than auto accidents, muggings and rapes combined.

* An act of adult domestic violence occurs every 15 seconds, more frequently than any other crime. In New York State, it is estimated that one person is victimized by physical violence in the home every three minutes -- or 157,680 people per year.

* Half of all violent crimes committed by relatives involved spouses or ex-spouses.

* One in three reported domestic violence assaults involves the use of a weapon and/or results in serious bodily injury.

* Of all female victims of homicide in the U.S., 30 percent were killed by husbands or boyfriends.

* A study of 1,000 battered women found that the male batterer also abused his children in 70 percent of the families in which children were present.

* It is estimated that 25 percent of workplace problems such as absenteeism, lower productivity, turnover and excessive use of medical benefits are due to family violence.
