While The Catholic University of America is located in Washington, D.C., it's impact is felt across the country. It boasts of having educated more bishops, priests and teachers than any other institution.
"These Church leaders, along with the many religious and laity that have other CU degrees, minister to every diocese in the nation," said Mary Ann Diamond of the office of diocese relations at Catholic University.
Catholics in the Albany Diocese will have the opportunity to support Catholic University when they give to the annual CU collection, taken up in all parishes this weekend.
Other contributions of CU include the Catholic School Leadership Program, which is used by dioceses to train principals and administrators of religious education programs.
CU's claims to fame, according to Ms. Diamond include: educating the foremost Catholic scholars and researchers who are now at Catholic universities around the world; a Biblical Studies program that is acclaimed as the world's best; and a canon law faculty that serves every diocese in the U.S. with workshops, pastoral services and training for personnel who staff marriage tribunals.
"The Biblical scholarship alone of Catholic University demonstrates its major impact on the Church," Ms. Diamond said. "World-renowned scholars at CU have created invaluable commentaries and insights that guide students and readers of Scripture into greater understanding of God's written word and revelation."
In a letter about the collection, Bishop Howard J. Hubbard told Catholics in the Albany Diocese: "Your financial and prayerful support in the past, together with that of Catholics throughout the United States, has helped the university to continue its significant educational mission. I am keenly and gratefully aware of the constant generosity of your response, and I urge your support of this 1996 appeal."
